Swat deal ‘local solution to local problem’: Qureshi
WASHINGTON: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmmood Qureshi has described last week’s Swat peace arrangement as a “local solution to a local problem”, saying it would not affect Islamabad’s resolve against violent extremism. “The logic behind this agreement is a local solution to a local problem, which is quick dispensation of justice. It is not any appeasement towards militants,” he said during a joint press conference after meeting his Afghan counterpart Rangeen Dafdar Spanta on Tuesday. “Pakistan’s determination and resolve to defeat terrorism is as sound as it was. We are absolutely clear in our objectives,” he said. Also on Tuesday, Qureshi met Richard Holbrooke, the special US representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan. The diplomat said the policy review meetings between top US, Pakistani and Afghan officials will help build mutual trust for effective security cooperation, The meetings are part of the wide-ranging review ordered by US President Barack Obama on Washington’s policy towards Afghanistan and Pakistan before the new administration begins multifaceted efforts to achieve security and stability in the region considered as critical to American security interests. agencies
